Treatment of Head Lice

Head lice vary in size from approximately 1 to 3 mm in size. They have been around for thousands of years and are generally known as not being native to any type particular color, age or race of person. Give any chance, they will not discriminate between who they feed on and more importantly it is safe to know that they do not carry or transmit diseases. They are wingless insects that live and breed, including feeding, on the human scalp. Not possessing legs that can jump or wings means that head lice can only crawl. The term NITS is generally given to the eggs that a female louse will lay. On average, the female louse lays 3 to 10 eggs a day and the eggs can generally be found within 2cm of the scalp. The eggs have s resemblance to dandruff and, unlike dandruff, they are easily spotted as they can not be brushed off the hair.

Head to head contact with someone with head lice is the most common way of catching head lice. Common among children due to the expose and relative closeness of children in schools, head lice can effect anyone. It is always recommended that treatment of head lice is given to anyone who has come in contact with someone who has head lice. However, there should not be any reason to treat those who have not come in contact. Although having head lice is not a particularly nice thought, the cleaning of the house is not generally an issue. The cleaning of the infected persons pillowcase (anything that has come in contact with the infected head) is generally sufficient when trying to eradicate the problem. Washing of the pillowcases should be done at at least 60 degrees Celsius. It is also suggested that putting the item in a clothes dryer for at least 10 minutes on the highest setting also helps eradication. One of the most common ways of getting rid of head lice is by using a specially designed comb. With long, hard steel teeth positioned together the force of the hand in the motion of the comb tends to get the majority of eggs off the hair. Alternatively, the use of every day materials from the home cupboard can help with the treatment of head lice.

Health Care Tips You Need to Know - Preparing for the Unexpected

A few days after Christmas, I received a phone call from a relative. They were calling to let me know a family member was in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. What was so shocking was the hospitalized family member was only 53-years-old and had just been at my house for the Christmas holiday, Just a few days ago, my family member had seemed perfectly healthy and now he was in the hospital recovering from stent procedures to correct blockages in his coronary arteries. Why tell you this story? -- Because it is a real life example illustrating an important point. No one can accurately predict when they might have a medical problem, what it will be or how serious it might become. Medical problems can happen to any of us, at any time. The question you need to ask yourself is, "Are you ready today, if a medical problem happens to you or a loved one?" The following questions and tips are listed to help you decide just how prepared you are.

1. Do you have a physician you see regularly? Everyone needs to have a doctor they can call on, even if you are generally healthy. Regular visits to a doctor can help discover problems patients may not even know they have (like high blood pressure) and allow a relationship to develop so the doctor can be familiar with your history even before you have a serious medical problem. It is much better to have a doctor who knows you before an emergency or serious medical problem develops. They can help coordinate your care and help you get in to see specialists sooner if that's what you need to do. If you don't have a doctor you can call tomorrow, then this tip needs to be high on your priority list!

2. Do you seek care early when a problem develops? This is so important to do! Seeking care early can greatly improve your prognosis (how well you will do). Everyone has heard this, but do you do this? My relative did! He went to the emergency room before his condition became irreversible. He is now home recuperating and learning what else he needs to modify to reduce his chances of having more cardiac problems. If he had not sought care early, his story might have had a very different, potentially fatal outcome. So, if you think you have a medical problem, you probably do. Don't delay - get care as early as you can.

3. Do you have a patient advocate? Everyone needs to have a patient advocate before they need one. For minor problems you may be your own best patient advocate. For serious matters you need someone else (family member or friend) who can help you look out for your best medical options. Patient advocates can help in so many different ways. They can be an extra pair of ears to listen at appointments, help you make tough decisions, transport you to appointments, help you research your particular medical problem, etc. If you don't have one yet - get one as soon as possible. Don't wait until you have an emergency to choose someone to help you.

Symptoms of Colds

Everyone gets a cold from time to time. Cold germs are spread easily from person to person and the average person gets at least one cold a year. There are some familiar symptoms of colds that help to ensure that what you have is a cold and not something worse. Not all symptoms accompany every cold. The main symptom of a cold is usually a stuffy nose. Some colds start with a stuffy nose and then progress to a runny nose while other strains seem to operate in the reverse. The stuffy nose usually gets worse at night. An over the counter decongestant may help to clear the nasal passages enough to get a good nights sleep. Nasal sprays can help clear congestion but can be addictive. Another symptom of a cold is a cough. This can happen because thick mucous is dripping into the back of the throat. Clearing the throat by coughing helps to get rid of the excess mucous. If the mucous moves into the chest it can cause chest congestion. This also produces a cough, which can be much stronger because it is trying to loosen phlegm from the chest. Sometimes the cough can be a persistent dry cough. This unproductive cough may be helped by using cough drops or by taking an over the counter cough syrup.

A runny nose sometimes accompanies colds. The runny nose is a symptom of a cold when excess nasal fluid is produced. The nasal discharge is thin and clear. If it is thick or is a yellow color it may indicate the presence of a sinus infection. Allow the excess mucous to come out so that it doesnt become stagnant. Stagnant mucous can lead to sinus infections. Many times you might get a sore throat with a cold. This happens when excess postnasal drip gets into the throat and produces a tickle. The mucous can stick to the throat so coughing will loosen it and allow it to go down. You may also get a sore throat from breathing through your mouth, especially at night. Another symptom of a cold is general fatigue. Your cold may make you feel tired and weak. This is because the body is trying to fight off the cold. You may have the chills and may not feel like eating. You may not be getting enough sleep because the cold symptoms are keeping you awake at night. Many people try to keep going when they have a cold. But the best thing you can do is to take it easy. Resting allows the body to better fight off the cold.

Hair Care Hair Split Ends Treatment

Split ends are the easiest type of hair damage to control. Split ends are the result of normal hair wear and tear, but can also by toweling your hair too vigorously when it is wet, over blow drying, and excessive coloring, bleaching, or perms. Another factor that can lead to split-ends is sun exposure. Fine hair is especially prone to splitting.

Causes There are different causes for split ends. Split ends occur when the protective cuticle is destroyed at the end of the hair. Split ends will happen to almost anyone. Split Ends are more likely to develop in brittle or dry hair. Typical causes of split ends damage include vigorous brushing, brushing hair when it is still wet, coloring and perming which make hair weak, and heat appliances. There are other causes for split ends beside some of the main ones mentioned above. Other causes could be excessive tangling, improper application or removal of hair extensions, headgear that snaps or rips delicate strands or even scratchy bedclothes, fingers or hands. Blow dryers, curling irons and flat ironers should all be avoided until you can get a haircut. The main reason is because they are actually known to cause or worsen split ends, especially when they are not used properly. Make sure that you use curling irons and flat irons when the hair is dry and, ideally, in combination with a hair serum. Also, be sure to not overuse these tools. Only using them several times a week is the best.

Take care not to split them in the first place, because the only cure is a trim, according to trichologists (hair doctors) everywhere. Trichoptilosis is a longitudinal splitting of hair fiber better known as "split ends". It develops after the protective cuticle has been stripped away from the end of hair fibers as a result of over processing. Any chemical or physical trauma that weathers the hair may eventually lead to split ends. Vigorous brushing can even induce it. Rinse well and then do a cool to cold rinse to seal the hair's cuticles and ends, adding instant sleekness and glossiness. Make sure that the split end areas are dried as straight as possible since splits look worse when they are allowed to wave, curl, frizz or spike out. To keep your hair healthy and to prevent split ends you should deep condition your hair once a month. A good method to doing this is to put the conditioner in your hair and place a plastic cap over your head with all your hair inside. Then place a hot damp towel on top of the plastic cap and leave on there for 10 minutes. Afterward, rinse hair with extremely cold water.
